Madrid Spain.- Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva intends to retake the Program More Doctors if he manages to get elected in the presidential elections next October, for which he announced his candidacy as head of the Workers’ Party (PT) last May.

Lula da Silva’s intention was confirmed by the media Gazeta do Povowho spoke with the doctor and federal deputy Alexandre Padilha.

Padilha, who was Minister of Health during the first term of former President Dilma Rousseff, defended the hiring of Cuban doctors and pointed out that they offer services “in more than 80 countries around the world.”

Just as he considered that the work of Caribbean doctors was fundamental during the COVID-19 pandemic in European and Asian countries.

According to the minister, the hiring of Cubans during the Mais Médicos Program represented savings for the Brazilian budget.

The program, which emerged in 2012 under the presidency of Dilma Rousseff and supported by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has been accused of human trafficking.

Based on the signed agreement, of the 5,000 dollars that Brazil paid monthly for each Cuban doctor belonging to the Mais Médicos program, the regime in Havana received 4,000 dollars.

In 2018, Jair Bolsonaro, upon his arrival in power, demanded that the Cuban government give specialists their full salary. Subsequently, the Island authorities withdrew the doctors from the program.

Last March it transpired that Cuban doctors sued to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for helping to organize the program.

The island’s doctors alleged before international bodies that they were forced to work under the threat of punishment by the regime. They also denounced that PAHO violated the Law for the Protection of Victims of Trafficking by facilitating the More Doctors program.
