Lula da Silva, emergency surgery for intracranial hemorrhage

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva

MIAMI, United States. – The president of BrazilLuiz Inácio Lula da Silva, underwent surgery this Tuesday at the Sírio-Lebanés Hospital, in São Paulo, to drain an intracranial hemorrhage caused by a fall that occurred on October 19.

The 79-year-old president is stable and under monitoring in the intensive care unit, according to the medical center in a newsletter published on social networks.

The operation went “without problems” and was carried out after Lula, suffering from “a headache”, went to a hospital in Brasilia on Monday night. An MRI revealed the presence of the hemorrhage, the origin of which is directly associated with the fall at the Alvorada Palace, the official residence of the Brazilian Presidency, which at the time caused a wound sutured with five stitches on the back of the neck.

After the discovery of the hematoma, the president was rushed to São Paulo, where he underwent surgery. “The surgery went without problems and, at this time, the president is well, under monitoring, in an intensive care bed,” the hospital detailed.

While Lula recovers, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin will assume presidential duties during the day on Tuesday. This Tuesday, the responsible doctors will offer a press conference to update the state of health of the president, who had recently maintained an intense work agenda, including the organization of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro and an official visit to Montevideo for the semiannual meeting of presidents of Mercosur.

Journalist Eleonora Gosman, CNN correspondent in Brazil, offered details about the case: “It was an intracranial hemorrhage, a consequence of the blow he had on October 19, when he fell in the Alvorada Palace,” he said in the program. CNN First Morning.

Gosman highlighted that, after the fall, “there was no apparent health problem” until the president began to feel discomfort and underwent tests that detected the internal injury.

In your social network accountCuban ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel wished Lula da Silva “a speedy recovery” and sent him a “big hug.”
