President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva congratulated Brazilian Fernanda Torres for the award for best actress in the drama category at the Golden Globes. “Exciting. Fernanda Torres is Brazil’s pride”, he wrote on his profile on the social network X.
“Best actress in a drama film at the Golden Globes for her great performance in the film I’m Still Here. As she herself says: life sucks. Congratulations, Fernanda Torres”, added the president.
The award – given to a Brazilian for the first time – is a recognition of Fernanda’s work in the film I’m Still Here.
In the production, she plays lawyer Eunice Paiva, widow of Rubens Paiva, a federal deputy murdered by the military dictatorship in 1971.
Fernanda competed with big stars from Hollywood such as Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Tilda Swinton, Pamela Anderson and Kate Winslet.
25 years ago, Fernanda Montenegro, mother of Fernanda Torres, competed in the same category for her performance in Central Brazil. She didn’t win, but the film won the Golden Globe in the best foreign film category.
“This is proof that art lasts in life, even during difficult times that Eunice Paiva went through and with so many problems in the world today. This is a film that helped us think about how to survive in times like these”, said Fernanda, during her acceptance speech.
