The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, confirmed this Thursday that he will contest a fourth presidential term in the October 2026 elections.
“I am going to run for a fourth term in Brazil,” Lula told the press during his state visit to Indonesia, at the end of a meeting with his counterpart Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta, according to him. EFE.
In his statement, the progressive leader noted that although his current term ends at the end of 2026, he is “prepared to contest other elections.”

Lula, who will turn 80 on October 27, pointed out that despite his age he has the same energy as when he was 30 and stressed that this decision will strengthen bilateral relations.
“We will see each other many more times and I will make the relationship between Indonesia and Brazil more valuable.”
The announcement came after the signing of agreements on energy, mining, agriculture and technology, among others, during a ceremony at the Indonesian Presidential Palace.
Lula and Subianto also agreed to advance a Mercosur-Indonesia Preferential Trade Agreement before next December.
Possible meeting with Trump
The Brazilian president, who arrived in Indonesia last night at the beginning of a tour of Southeast Asia, was received with honors at the Presidential Palace, accompanied by a large delegation of Brazilian ministers.

After this visit, the president will participate in the summit of leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in which a possible meeting with the US president, Donald Trump, is planned.
Lula is the founder of the Workers’ Party (PT), he governed for two consecutive periods, between 2003 and 2011, and returned to power on January 1, 2023, after defeating then-president Jair Bolsonaro in the elections.
