In his last commitment at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UN), in New York, this Wednesday (25), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva condemned the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
“It is important to remember that the total number of deaths in Lebanon is 620 people. It is the highest number of deaths since the civil war that lasted between 1975 and 1990. It is also important to remember that 94 women and 50 children died, 2,058 people were injured and 10,000 people were forced to retreat and evacuate their homes,” Lula said at a press conference.
He recalled that many people have already died in the West Bank, with 5,700 people injured.
“In addition to what I call genocide in the Gaza Strip. It is important to remember that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was tried by the International Tribunal that tried Vladimir Putin and he is condemned in the same way as Putin. It is important to remember that there have been several discussions here in the UN Security Council, several attempts at peace and ceasefire have been approved and that he does not comply,” he added.
For the president, the countries that support Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech need to start making a greater effort to stop this genocide because the world is in a situation where, on the one hand, we are taking care of the planet to have a better quality of life and reduce greenhouse gases, and on the other hand, human beings are killing each other.
“Therefore, I strongly condemn this behavior of the Israeli government, and I am sure that the majority of the Israeli people do not agree with this genocide. We are also fighting to free the Hamas hostages. It makes no sense to hold innocent people hostage. It is important that Hamas contributes to a more vocal approach to freeing the hostages. I believe that humanity cannot live with and accept as normal what is happening in Israel, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and the West Bank,” said Lula.
Lula reiterated Brazil’s position on the need to renew the United Nations so that it can resolve conflicts that are currently adrift because there is no global governance in the world.
“If we do not renew the UN, making it more representative from more continents, today’s geopolitics is different from what it was in 1945, and the importance of countries is also different, either more or less. So what we are advocating is that there be a new geopolitics so that we can have all continents represented in the UN, including in the Security Council, ending the right of veto and increasing the power of command of the United Nations,” said the president.
