brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaoffered a balance of the South American Summit that was held in Brasilia, with the purpose of strengthening ties and drawing common agendas between the countries of the region.
The president of the South American giant emphasized the need to march together in favor of common development and expressed his willingness to travel to Venezuela, despite the international siege imposed against the Caribbean country.
Questioned about his relations with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, he expressed that it was a mistake that many countries recognized Juan Guaidó as president. “When they (European Union) supported Guaidó in Venezuela, I told them, it is not possible for the democratic heritage of humanity to support an impostor,” he said.
“I am going to Venezuela to talk with Maduro. I want to visit all the countries of South America, I have to travel to all the countries with which Brazil has relations”, said President Lula excitedly, who said that he may not have time during his term, but he wants to strengthen ties with his neighbors.
New Global Governance
The Brasilia event showed all attendees in agreement with the need to create a multipolar world that defends the sovereignty of States and fights for the environment.
“I call for a new Global Governance, so that decisions about the environment are not hindered,” said President Lula at the closing of the South American meeting.
Regarding the ideological diversity of governments in the region right now, he said that “there is more plurality and we have to learn to live with it, that strengthens democracy.”
He stressed that a new meeting will be held in August to evaluate the progress of the agreements made at this meeting “to find out what each president thinks of his part of the Amazon, to be able to make a decision and improve the lives of the peoples.”
The Brasilia Consensus will mark a new starting point.
moving away from the dollar
Asked about the creation of a regional currency or the one that will be created in the BRICS, the Brazilian president said that “when we had gold as an exchange rate, the United States did not ask anyone for permission to impose the dollar.”
He wondered “why can’t the BRICS create a currency? Why are we forced to buy dollars to be able to trade?
He stressed that what seems strangest to him is that the press in our countries finds it strange that they want to have their own and independent monetary symbol.
He reflected that currencies belong to the sovereignty of a country, so monetary sovereignty cannot be delivered to foreign interests. “The United States is not going to be hurt (if they leave the dollar), they are going to continue with their dollar,” said the host of the event.
“We want economic sovereignty, to be the owners of our own navel. That is little for someone who lived through 500 years of colonialism, ”she concluded.
