Lula celebrates announcement of ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Brazilian government celebrated the announcement of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, in the Gaza Strip, to suspend a military conflict that has already killed more than 46 thousand Palestinians, most of them women and children, in addition to 1,200 Israeli soldiers, since October 2023.Lula celebrates announcement of ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

The pact was announced this Wednesday (15) by the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and should start to count from January 19th.

“After so long of suffering and destruction, the news that a ceasefire in Gaza has finally been negotiated brings hope. May the cessation of fighting and the release of hostages help build a lasting solution that brings peace and stability to the entire Middle East “, wrote the president in a post on social media.

The Itamaraty Palace, which represents the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also issued an official statement welcoming the suspension of the war, after mediation promoted by the governments of Qatar, Egypt and the United States.

“If officially confirmed by the parties involved, the agreement will put an end to the conflict that, in 15 months, fatally killed more than 46,000 Palestinians, with a large proportion of women and children, and more than 1,200 Israelis, in addition to more than 160 journalists and 265 employees of the United Nations. The conflict also caused the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of people and the destruction of the infrastructure of the Palestinian territory, including hospitals and schools, generating incalculable indirect damage for current and future generations. Brazil urges the parties involved to respect the terms of the agreement and to guarantee the permanent cessation of hostilities, the release of all hostages and the unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, as well as to ensure the necessary conditions for the start of the urgent process reconstruction of its civil infrastructure”, says the note.

The complex agreement, negotiated for months, provides for an initial six-week ceasefire, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Palestinian territory and the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for prisoners held by Israel.

Still in a statement, the Brazilian government called for the immediate resumption of the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians, with a two-state solution, within the 1967 borders, which includes the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, belonging to Palestine, and East Jerusalem as its capital.
