Lula calls Latin America a zone of peace and criticizes interventions

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defended, this Monday (20), the sovereignty of Latin America and highlighted that it is a priority to maintain the region as a “zone of peace”. In the morning, he received the credentials of 28 new ambassadors in Brazil and, in a quick speech, criticized interventions from countries outside the region.Lula calls Latin America a zone of peace and criticizes interventions

“We are a continent free of weapons of mass destruction, without ethnic or religious conflicts. Foreign interventions can cause greater damage than is intended to be avoided,” he told foreign diplomats.

For the president, the region is going through “a moment of increasing polarization and instability”.

“You will be treated and given the attention of Itamaraty as if you were friends of ours for many years, because what we want is to show the world that we need to strengthen multilateralism and multilateralism is based on good cordial, commercial, economic relations and, above all, a peaceful relationship, without hatred, without denialism and without violating the basic principle of democracy and human rights”, he added.

Recently, Brazil, together with the majority of Latin American countries, expressed “deep concern” about “extra-regional” military movements in the Caribbean region. The document is an indirect reference to the sending of ships, submarines and military personnel by the United States (USA) to the coast of Venezuela.

Normally, Lula receives ambassadors in a private meeting in his office at Palácio do Planalto. However, for scheduling reasons, a collective ceremony was held on this occasion.

In his speech, Lula also spoke about the importance of international politics in his government and said that he has already visited 37 countries in his third term. He also highlighted the multilateral events that will take place in Brazil this year, such as the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, in November, and the Mercosur Summit, in December.

As of today, representatives of the following nations are authorized to dispatch in the country: El Salvador, Albania, Cambodia, Thailand, Tanzania, Belarus, Kenya, Oman, Dominican Republic, Burkina Faso, Bangladesh, Mauritania, Sudan, Senegal, Uruguay, Democratic Republic of Congo, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, United Arab Emirates, Ireland, Zambia, Austria, Finland, Malaysia, Ghana, Lebanon and Sri Lanka.

Traditionally, governments consult with the country abroad about appointing a new ambassador to work in its territory. In diplomacy, consultation is called agreementwhich may or may not be granted. The ambassador then assumes the post after delivering documents sent by the president of his country to the government of the country where he will work.

Presenting letters of credentials to the President of the Republic is a formality that increases the diplomat’s prerogatives in Brazil. If the credential is not received by the president, the ambassador cannot represent his country in official hearings or ceremonies, for example.
