THE President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva issued an official note, On the night of Wednesday (30), in which it defends the country’s democracy and sovereignty against the US initiatives against Brazilian economy and justice.
“Brazil is a sovereign and democratic country that respects human rights and independence between powers. A country that defends multilateralism and harmonious coexistence between nations, which has ensured the strength of our economy and the autonomy of our foreign policy. The interference of the US government in Brazilian justice is unacceptable.
This was Lula’s first public reaction after the US government announced a Punitive sanction against the Supreme Court Minister (STF) Alexandre de Moraes and, hours later, to officialize, through a Executive Order of President Donald Trump, the taxation of 50% on products sold by Brazilwhich contains, however, a List of almost 700 exceptions.
In the note, the Brazilian President expresses solidarity of the federal government to Moraes and says that the magistrate is “target of sanctions motivated by the action of Brazilian politicians who betray our homeland and our people in defense of their own interests” “.
“One of the foundations of democracy and respect for human rights in Brazil is the independence of the judiciary and any attempt to weaken it constitutes threat to the democratic regime itself. Justice is not negotiated,” Lula continues.
The president recalls that the law in Brazil covers citizens and all companies and that activities that affect the lives of the population and democracy are subject to standards, including digital platforms.
“Brazilian society rejects content of hatred, racism, child pornography, blows, fraud, discourses against human rights and democracy.”
The note signed by the president still considers unjustifiable the use of political arguments to validate the commercial measures announced by the US government against Brazilian exports.
“Brazil has accumulated in recent decades a significant commercial deficit in goods and services with the United States. The political motivation of measures against Brazil attentive against national sovereignty and the very historical relationship between the two countries,” he notes.
Finally, the Government points to the willingness to negotiate only commercial aspects of the relationship with the United Stateswithout giving up the defense instruments of the country provided for in its legislation, as is the case of the Commercial Reciprocity Law, in addition to a Contingency plan to alleviate the economic impacts of tariffs.
“Our economy is increasingly integrated with major international markets and partners. We have already started evaluating the impacts of measures and the elaboration of actions to support and protect Brazilian workers, companies and families,” concludes Lula’s official note.
