Brazilian and Colombian presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Gustavo Petro, respectively, have coordinated their diplomatic efforts to resolve the Venezuelan crisis, which arose from the July 28 presidential elections that both the Venezuelan government and the opposition claim to have won.
The presidents of Brazil and Colombia discussed options for negotiating an end to the Venezuela crisis in a phone call on Wednesday, August 14, Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said.
“I was on a phone call with Colombia, trying to see if we could find a way out of the problems in Venezuela, to see if we could restore democratic calm in that country,” he said at an event, confirming a report by Reuters what they would talk about on Wednesday.
The phone call between Lula and his counterpart, Gustavo Petro, was decided after Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador withdrew from a three-way presidential initiative on Venezuela’s disputed elections, two sources told Reuters.

Lula and Petro have asked Venezuelan authorities to release a detailed vote count. The Mexican president said Tuesday that he will not participate in talks with Brazil and Colombia for now and will wait for the review of the elections by the Venezuelan Supreme Court.
Lula and Petro decided to continue talks after being informed of the Mexican president’s withdrawal, said one of the Brazilian officials, who asked not to be identified in order to speak freely.
