Brazilian Luiz Maurício da Silva has qualified for the javelin throw final at the Paris Olympic Games. The athlete from Minas Gerais reached the mark of 85.91 meters, surpassing the 84m required for automatic qualification for the final of the event. This is the first Olympics of the Brazilian’s career. The javelin throw final will be on Thursday (8), starting at 3:25 pm (Brasília time).

The distance of 85.91m in the javelin throw was achieved on Luiz Maurício’s third attempt and was the best he had ever achieved in his career. He also broke the South American record for the event, which was previously held by him. With this achievement, the athlete from Juiz de Fora qualified with the sixth best time among the eight who advanced to the final of the javelin throw. In the qualifying round on Tuesday, Luiz threw twice more: he achieved 81m62 on his first attempt and 83m21 on his second.
In the other javelin throw qualifier, Pedro Henrique Rodrigues failed to advance to the final. His best distance was 79m46, which was not enough to qualify.

In the 110-meter hurdles repechage, Rafael Pereira won the heat with a time of 13.54 seconds, in a very disputed decision that was only defined in the thousandths. He is classified for the semifinal, which will be played this Wednesday (7).

In the women’s long jump qualifying round, Brazil did not advance to the finals. Eliane Martins jumped 6.36m, and finished only in 12th place in group A. In group B, Lissandra Campos reached the mark of 6m02, finishing in 15th place.
In the women’s 400m, Tiffani Marinho finished in sixth place in heat 4 of the repechage. With a time of 52.32 seconds, she did not advance to the semifinals of the event.
