The construction of a new Seafood Market, an initiative of the capital’s mayor, José Luis Fábrega, continues to generate reactions among members of civil society, as they have stated that the project has been without consultation with the public and has not been explained in the best way.
Luis Pinedo Velásquez, from the citizen movement “Come as you wish”, announced that at 5:00 pm this Thursday, February 24, a protest will be held against the million-dollar construction of this new market. “The protest will be next to the current Seafood Market,” he said.
He added that this movement aims to let Mayor Fábrega know that this space (Cinta Costera) is used by Panamanian families and that there is already a Seafood Market.
He specified that the budget should be divided among the 26 corregimientos of the capital district, pointing out that the maintenance of the new market will reduce the development of all the communities in the next 30 years.
“With $5 or $10 million, without being an engineer, I assure you that with 10% of what is intended to be spent, we would leave the current market first-hand,” Pinedo said.
The new market project will cost approximately between $40 million and $50 million.
The construction of this project has generated controversy after it became known that the citizen consultation to continue with the initiative was held on November 11, 2022 with 22 residents of the Calidonia corregimiento.
