(EFE).- The Cuban opponent and leader of the San Isidro Movement (MSI), Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, lost the sight of one eye in the prison where he has been held since the anti-government protests last July, denounced this Thursday the NGO Amnesty International (AI).
Erika Guevara, director for the Americas of AI, based in London, denounced through her Twitter account that the dissident – who abandoned a hunger strike that lasted three months in March – has not received medical attention and demanded his immediate release. .
“The situation of Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara in Cuba should be a source of shame for the Cuban government and of complete indignation for those of us who are witnesses to its deterioration,” Guevara censured.
Earlier this month, the activist and artist Claudia Genlui Hidalgo denounced on networks that the leader of the MSI had been denied specialized care to address his vision problems. On April 6, the US government also demanded that Cuba provide “immediate medical attention” to Otero Alcántara.

After leaving his hunger strike on March 11, sources close to the dissident reported that he would choose to go to trial, after six months in the Guanajay prison, some 45 kilometers west of Havana.
The Island Prosecutor’s Office requested seven years in prison for Otero Alcántara – whom AI considers a prisoner of conscience – for aggravated contempt, public disorder and instigation to commit a crime for going out on the street, in front of the headquarters of the San Isidro Movement in Old Havana to sing Patria y Vida among the neighbors, on April 4 of 2021. In that same file is Maykel Castillo osorbfor which 10 years in prison are requested.
On Alcántara weighs, in addition, the accusation of outrage to the patriotic symbols, open for making the work of art drapeau. The trial date is not yet known.
