Havana.- Cuban Luis Enrique Zayas registered today his best mark of the season and finished in the third seat of the High Jump Indoor Meeting in Houstepeche, Czech Republic, where he made his second appearance in this winter tour.
Zayas has now exceeded 2.30 meters, and although he still lacks four centimeters to meet the minimum mark required for registration in the Belgrade Indoor World Championship, the record achieved leaves a very good impression and exceeds the expectations for this stage of his coach Juan Francisco Centelles.
The Lima 2019 Pan American champion occupied a similar position three days ago at the meeting in Udine, Italy, with just 2.20 meters. However, Centelles acknowledged that he had really liked the way he faced that competition.
After his presentation on Italian soil, Centelles confessed to Jit that his student had taught good physical shape and an effective takeoff, so he expected a progression close to 2.28 meters in his next outing.
What was done this Saturday confirms the correctness of his criteria and ratifies that the preparation is going, so far, on the right track.
This Saturday’s fair was won by Sanghyeok Woo, from South Korea, with a personal record of 2.36 meters, the year’s leading mark. In second place was the American Ju Vaughn Harrison (2.32).
Zayas began his presentation with ease over 2.16 meters and later surpassed, and without fail, the heights of 2.20-2.24-2.28 and 2.30. He then resigned at 2.32 meters, when he already knew he was third in the classification, and tried unsuccessfully to exceed 2.34 three times.
The next presentation of Cuban will be on February 15 in Banska Bistryka, Slovakia.
