The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS), headed by Uruguayan Luis Almagro, issued a statement today in which “rejects and repudiates” the initiative of reform of the Constitution of Nicaraguapresented by the Daniel Ortega regime. According to the OAS Secretariat, with these modifications “Ortega and his allies seek to increase their absolute control of the State and perpetuate themselves in power.”
The international organization described the reform document as “illegitimate in form and content,” and denounces that this maneuver by the dictator of Managua is an “aberrant form of institutionalization of the matrimonial dictatorship in the Central American country and is a definitive attack on the State of Democratic Right.

In the statement, the General Secretariat stressed that the Nicaraguan people need “peace, democracy and respect for Human Rights.” He insists that Nicaraguans need “authentic, legitimate, universal and free elections.”
End of the dictatorship and redouble diplomatic pressure, he says
“The Nicaraguan People need the end of the dictatorship,” Almagro declares bluntly.
The secretary of the OAS insists, in the note that he has disseminated on social networks and through the organization’s official channels, that “the rejection of the dictatorship and your actions must remain total and diplomatic pressure on the dictatorial conjugal regime must be redoubled“, so that there is justice for the people and punishment for those who have perpetrated this attack.”
Nicaragua outside the OAS
The Sandinista dictatorship formally notified the OAS, on November 19, 2021, of its decision to report the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS), thus beginning the process of the country’s withdrawal from said international organization. This process, in accordance with OAS regulations, was completed on November 19, 2023, the date on which Nicaragua ceased to be a full member of the organization.
Throughout this period, President Ortega has expressed strong criticism of the OAS and its secretary general, Luis Almagro. On several occasions, Ortega has accused Almagro of serving the interests of the United States and acting as an agent of imperialism, pointing out that the OAS has adopted interventionist positions in Nicaragua’s internal affairs.
These statements reflect the tense relationship between the Nicaraguan government and the hemispheric organization, especially after the OAS’s criticism of the November 2021 general elections, in which Ortega was appointed by the Supreme Electoral Council, as a result of a farce that included the imprisonment of seven presidential candidates and the outlawing of the political parties that could challenge him for the government seat.
