Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), reported this Wednesday that he had a meeting with David Smolansky, commissioner for the Venezuelan migration crisis.

According to the information, Smolansky presented the most recent report on the Venezuelan diaspora, but the OAS secretary did not offer many details of the content of the document. However, he indicated that the migration crisis is getting worse.

“Far from being fixed, the crisis is worsening with 1.2 million people who fled during the pandemic with the borders closed,” Almagro said in Twitter.

Meanwhile, Smolansky has not made the report public, so the total number of Venezuelan migrants according to his count is unknown.

However, until April 22, 2022, the Venezuelan Diaspora Observatory recorded 7.2 million Venezuelans who emigrated to different parts of the world. According to information provided by the director of that organization, Tomás Páez, these migrants are distributed in at least 91 countries, including African nations.

«The bulk is concentrated in Latin America, despite the fact that a restructuring process is taking place. People are leaving Argentina, from Peru and Ecuador they are leaving for the United States,” said Páez.
