Luis Alfaro on the construction of a new seafood market: ‘They are going to turn the coastal strip into an Albrook Mall’

Alfaro indicated that what they propose with this plan is to eliminate a part of the park of the Coastal Strip and build “a shopping center” there.

The architect Luis Alfaro referred this Wednesday on Radio Panama to the construction of the new seafood market, a project promoted by the capital’s mayor, José Luis Fábrega.

He specified that there are many issues to analyze in depth. “It is very difficult for you to carry out a citizen consultation if to date we do not know any details of the project, so how can you consult the population on how they want a new seafood market if you are not giving details of what this project consists of,” he said.

He mentioned that an alleged citizen consultation was held on this project in which 25 people participated, several of whom were officials from the Mayor’s Office of Panama, and they signed twice, “and how is this possible for a work of great magnitude?”

Alfaro indicated that what they are proposing with this plan is to eliminate part of the park from the Cinta Costera and build “a shopping center there. They are going to turn the Cinta Costera into an Albrook Mall.”

The architect noted that Panama City has very little public space and very few parks. “The World Health Organization recommends between 10 and 15 m2 of parks per inhabitant and Panama City is around 2 m2 per inhabitant,” he stated.
