Santo Domingo.-President Luis Abinader will attend his sixth presentation of accounts before the National Assembly on February 27, amidst citizen expectations and a political atmosphere full of criticism.
The accountability scheduled for tomorrow, which is celebrated every National Independence Day, would be the second of his second presidential term, but in a context marked by low citizen expectations regarding new high-impact announcements, according to expressions collected in different social and political sectors.
From the ruling party, the mayor of the National District and general secretary of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Carolina Mejía, assured that she will be present “early” in the National Congress, where she will also participate in the program prior to the presidential speech. He announced that details are expected on progress in sports works with a view to the Central American and Caribbean Games, as well as a general balance of management.
“We have good expectations, I know that there will be good reports of executed works and future projections,” said the official, highlighting that the president has accustomed the country to detailed accounts.
The president of the Senate, Ricardo de los Santos, spoke along the same lines, recalling that this is a constitutional mandate and appreciated that the president has maintained the fight against corruption and the defense of national sovereignty in the face of the Haitian crisis as central axes.
“We are sure that tomorrow we will have accountability worthy of the circumstances,” said de los Santos.
With this intervention, Luis Abinader will add six speeches before the National Assembly: four corresponding to his first term (2020-2024) and two in the current period 2024-2028.
The presidential report is produced in a scenario where citizens demand concrete answers regarding the cost of living, citizen security, employment, electric energy and public services, issues that have dominated the national debate in recent months.
Although the ruling party highlights progress in infrastructure, macroeconomic stability and institutional transparency, critical sectors consider that President Abinader’s speech should offer specific announcements and measurable solutions to the pending challenges.
As is tradition, the message will be broadcast nationally and will mark the national political agenda for the coming weeks, at a key moment for the consolidation of Luis Abinader’s second presidential term.
