Lucy Córdoba: “We are normalizing violence, it has become naturalized”

According to Article 19 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, both the parents and the State are guarantors of creating security for the child.

The activist and defender of children’s rights, Lucy Córdoba, elucidated on Radio Panama the issue of abuse and violence against minors, stressing that we are normalizing violence and it has become naturalized.

“We are also normalizing the speech. I want to say that we are talking about a lot of strategies and laws, but we have not talked about results,” she added.

He specified that this issue of violence against children has been going on for many years. “In 2018, strategies were created that included government institutions to reduce and protect our children more. We are in 2022 and yet the numbers are increasing. When I speak of actions, I am not only referring to the certainty of punishment, but also to taking programs and reaching these vulnerable places where the greatest number of violations take place,” said Córdoba.

According to Article 19 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, both the parents and the State are guarantors of creating security for the child. “If this security does not exist in parents and the community, the State, with action programs, must reach these places with social promoters, so that there are ways for these children to raise their voices and there is a more effective intervention,” he said. .
