The price of cheese fell this week, which runs from June 12 to 18, after registering a constant rise for six consecutive months, in which it reached record prices in the country’s history.
The previous week it decreased only two córdobas per pound and for these days it presents a significant drop of 7 and 9 córdobas. Dry cheese, which is the most widely consumed in Nicaraguan homes, as of this week is being bought at 90 córdobas per pound, 9 córdobas less than in previous days.
Other types of cheese that also dropped in price are quesillo, which is quoted at 84 córdobas, before it was up to 90 córdobas; the curd, which is an alternative that cheese consumers took to replace that dairy, is found at 80 córdobas.
Traders in the Iván Montenegro market, where this product is sold in greater quantities, assure that the supply trend for the coming weeks is downward. Situation that is produced by the so-called milk stroke, due to the abundance of grass produced by the rains.
Other products maintain their prices
The egg, which is an important food in the diet, maintains its prices, in relation to other weeks. The largest one is for up to 160 córdobas per box, the medium one is 150 and the small one is priced at 145 córdobas per box.
The cream, like the egg, shows no variation in its cost and is found at 30 córdobas a half pound.
Despite the notable change in the price of cheese, it continues to be expensive for residents who have recently increased their basic basket products and expect significant drops in other foods to provide real relief to the economy of Nicaraguan families.
