Lorena Cabrera, Strategic Marketing Manager of Cementos Pacasmayo: “We have managed to avoid the emission of approximately 9 million tons of CO2 equivalent”

Lorena Cabrera, Strategic Marketing Manager at Cementos Pacasmayo, details the double focus of the concept that directs the actions of the company she represents: Eco-efficiency, a term that builds trust and represents its vision for the future.

What does the phrase “eco-efficiency that builds trust” mean for Cementos Pacasmayo?

We have been working on the entire concept of eco-efficiency for many years. Ecoefficiency is made up of the word eco, which refers to sustainability, but also to the word efficiency, because we seek to make our products in the best possible way with the best use of resources. So, in the balance of the construction of our products, we seek balance to provide the best quality, the best service and with the least possible impact. In fact, for 26 years we have been researching and developing the added cement market and products so that through these we can generate significant savings in the environmental impact that cement products have, in general. In 1996 we made our first exploration into the world of added cements where we were able to provide the north with a better product solution.

What have been your main achievements?

We have many to mention, both international and national. We have been positioned in the Dow Jones for more than 10 years and in that sense we have five years in the Sustainability Year Book, which gives us clarity regarding how we have been working and what indicators we must continue to improve to ensure that sustainability actions can effectively be permanent over time and sustainable in the company from its conception and how it will impact at all levels. We also have recognition from Merco ESG. And finally, we have other important internal actions that are execution and alignment achievements.

What other initiatives stand out within your sustainability and innovation strategy?

We have a broad concept of innovation and sustainability. We must understand that sustainability is a three-axis work. From governance, that is, everything that we must have internally, such as commitments to ISOs. Ethical and legal governance is super important. There is also a social axis and another that is environmental to complete this environment. From the innovation area side, we have been relating specific spaces to develop products with which we can make positive impacts on progressive savings. We have different solutions for construction masters, we give them better training and elements so that they can perform with their clients in the best way. From the social aspect we have been building bases for responsible construction. And when we talk about the environmental field, we work so that our products continue to be those that lead in development issues, so that they can meet better standards and efficiencies around the intensive use of clinker.

What does it mean to you to be among the 10 companies with the best reputation in Peru and to be a leader in your sector, according to the Merco ESG ranking?

It fills us with great satisfaction that the public can recognize the arduous task that exists in the company to do things not only well, but excellent and better every year. That we are recognized within the top 10 and in competition with other important players at a national and international level is a clear indicator that we are doing things well. What we want is to be a reference so that all our good practices can be transferred to other companies.

The added segments have been a key piece in the Pacasmayo route. How important are they in Cementos Pacasmayo’s commitment to sustainability?

Clinker is the main element to produce our products, particularly cements. Traditional cements do not have special additions; The additions, for their part, have components that replace certain amounts of clinker. The main element of cement goes to the kilns of cement plants and is combined with certain raw materials that are cooked inside a giant kiln that results in clinker, which is pulverized and put into the cement bag. The objective is to reduce the amount of clinker we have in the bags by active additions that give special properties to the cement, such as anti-salt or heat of hydration, which means that the cement does not heat up as quickly and can be worked better. It also gives it workability properties, that is, adhesion when it is being placed. The work and continuous research of our quality areas seek to improve the innovation pipeline from the point of view of these products and that this is transferred to other types of development such as concrete, where other types of additives are used that allow clinker savings. With the elements added to the cement we have managed to avoid the emission of approximately 9 million tons of CO2 equivalent.

How do you envision the future of sustainable construction in Peru and the role of Pacasmayo?

If we want a sustainable city, we have to go for products that help us build. Concrete paving roads can be an excellent solution to create increasingly sustainable cities because they require less maintenance, this has a long-term impact and can be used with products that are already optimized. As Pacasmayo, we actively act to provide solutions to our clients and consumers, to publicize the good practices that we can apply. For example, the reduction of clinker from the conceptualization of the city and architecture, per se of houses or buildings with BIM technology, optimization of internal processes, etc. Communicating the benefits of the alternatives we can give to infrastructure to have long-term impact and resilience is important.


The sustainable route of Pacasmayo

The construction solutions company from northern Peru stands out in the Peruvian industry with an Eco-Efficient portfolio and a comprehensive commitment, backed by international certifications and recognitions.

With a long history of forging progress from the north of Peru, Cementos Pacasmayo has evolved far beyond the production of construction materials to become an example of sustainability in the region. Its corporate purpose, “To build together the future you dream of,” is materialized in a business strategy that convincingly integrates Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria.

Eco-Efficient Portfolio

The sustainable route of Pacasmayo is not recent. It began more than 26 years ago with the formation of its Eco-Efficient portfolio, composed of added cements that, due to their composition, have a lower environmental impact compared to a traditional Portland cement (Type I). Thanks to the implementation of this portfolio, the company has managed to avoid the emission of approximately 9 million tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2eq) in replacement of Type I cement. In 2024, these represented 80% of its cement sales. Thus, it has contributed significantly to meeting the goals of the Peru 2030 Cement Industry Roadmap.

Adding to this effort is the innovation of the EcoSaco, a packaging that disintegrates in the top-style concrete mixer. With its correct use, it allows reducing the volume of waste from construction projects and facilitates a cleaner space, ensuring that up to 70% of a construction site can be executed in a more environmentally friendly manner.

Quality certification

In 2023, Pacasmayo reached a crucial milestone by obtaining certification for its entire cement portfolio under ICONTEC’s product quality evaluation scheme 5, the highest and most rigorous established by the Supreme Decree that regulates the marketing of cement throughout the country. Through a thorough audit of the quality management system in production, manufacturing and marketing in all its plants and authorized sales points, the company was able to ratify the quality and reliability of its products, guaranteeing that they meet the most demanding quality criteria.

Recognized leadership

The company’s efforts to integrate sustainability have been validated by the most prestigious global indices, consolidating its reputation and responsible management.

For the seventh consecutive year, the company is part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). Likewise, 2025 is the fifth consecutive year that Pacasmayo has been included in The Sustainability Yearbook. A third recognition, this time for the third consecutive year, comes with the Merco Empresas 2025 ranking, positioning itself among the ten companies with the best reputation in Peru.

Growing together with their communities

Sustainability takes on a deep meaning for Pacasmayo through projects that improve people’s lives, such as Sueños en Concreto. This initiative seeks to improve the quality of life of families in northern Peru, through the replacement of dirt floors with resistant concrete floors, building healthier, safer and more hopeful homes.

As of September 2025, this intervention positively impacted more than 8,000 people and 2,000 homes, with notable results: 98.4% of beneficiary families stated that their quality of life improved.

Additionally, the company strengthens its value chain through the Crece+ program, providing technical training to local suppliers on crucial topics such as human rights, sustainability, occupational safety and risk management, promoting a network of strategic partners that share ethical values ​​and responsible practices.
