López: “there is a demand” and “pressure” in the country to lower the age

The mayor of Durazno, Carmelo Vidalín, proposed modify the age so that you can access the book to drive motorcycles, cars and trucks. In this sense, the Congress of Mayors will analyze the reduction next week and the president of Congress, Guillermo López, from Florida, announced at a press conference that his position is to “consider” the issue.

Vidalín’s proposal, which currently holds the presidency of the Single Vehicle Revenue System (Sucive), involves lowering the minimum age to 17 years, in the case of cars (currently it is 18); and 16 in the case of motorcycles, “up to a certain cylinder capacity”. López added the possibility of lowering the age of some professional notebooks, which is currently 21 years old. “It’s a job opportunity,” he argued.

Asked by the press if the measure did not contradict the government’s intention to reduce the number of traffic accidents, at a time when there is an increase in accidents on national routes, López ruled it out: «It is good based on that. The main objective is to lower the number of claims. Not necessarily because the age of the single driving license is lowered in some conditions, we are going to attack the number of accidents, on the contrary ».

Vidalín considered that reality showed “in fact” that there were minors driving in the interior of the country. López agreed that “there is a demand” and “pressure” within the country to lower the age.

“We send technical studies from other countries to analyze it. We must attend to the reality of the interior, “said López.
