López Obrador invites the daughter of 'Che' Guevara to the celebrations for the independence of Mexico

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador revealed this Wednesday that Aleida Guevara, daughter of Ernesto Che Guevara, will be among the special guests of the celebrations that commemorate the Independence of Mexico, on September 15 and 16.

Along with her, assured the president, will be the former president of Bolivia Evo Morales and the former president of Uruguay José Mujica; the son of Martin Luther King, along with his wife, Andrea Waters, and his daughter, Yolanda, as well as Richard Assange and Gabriel Shipton, father and brother, respectively, of the activist Julian Assange.

Also on the guest list, shown to the press, are one of the daughters of peasant leader César Chávez, the family of Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama and the left-wing linguist and ideologue Noam Chomsky, but still, the president warned, have not confirmed.

Without mentioning their full names, in his usual informal tone, López Obrador did not mention the subject until he reached question time in his daily morning conference. “We are going to have guests. Don’t you have the list? There are about ten guests who are going to accompany me in the Grito [el acto que inaugura las celebraciones] and they will also be in the parade”.

It is not usual for international guests to be given such prominence in national celebrations, although the president himself already marked a milestone in last year’s.
