López Obrador intends to create a free health system with Cuban doctors

MADRID, Spain.- Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) assured that he will create a universal and free health system, for which he has Cuban doctors.

His “Health Plan for Well-being” will be active in mid-2023, the president specified this Friday in his morning conference from the Mexican state of Zacatecas.

“It will be guaranteed, it is my commitment, it is quite a challenge, but by the middle of next year we will have a quality, universal, free health system throughout Mexico,” he said.

According to his statements, the process has already begun in the states of Colima, Tlaxcala and Nayarit, where the Cuban doctors are located.

“The specialist doctors are already arriving. We brought them and we are not going to stop thanking the brotherly people of Cuba and their Government because specialist doctors from Cuba are working in the hospital in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, as they are doing in other hospitals in Nayarit and other states, Colima,” he told the regard.

“And we are going to continue hiring specialist doctors in Cuba and in other countries, even if it hurts them,” “because we are committed to ensuring that doctors are not lacking,” he added.

López Obrador also referred to corruption in the health sector, blaming the private system and officials from previous governments: “In the purchase of medicines there were 100,000 million pesos and there was no supply, they bought at extremely high prices… so all that was it is cleaning, health is being federalized.”

In May 2022, during AMLO’s visit to Cuba, the Mexican government and the island’s authorities signed a health agreement for hiring 500 doctors by the Aztec country.

At the beginning of last August, Mexico announced that the number of Cuban doctors destined to fulfill a mission would increase to 641.

The first 60 Cuban doctors hired by the Mexican president arrived in the state of Nayarit at the end of July.

After the arrival of this first group, the senator of the National Action Party (BREAD), Julen Rementería del Puerto, denounced that the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador would pay the Cuban regime 146 thousand Mexican pesos per month for each doctor hired, which is equivalent to more than 7,000 dollars.

The sending of doctors to Mexico has generated great controversy, and opponents of the AMLO government have questioned him for financing the Havana dictatorship through health professionals who are exploited.
