After US President Joe Biden renounced his intention to seek re-election, it will be up to members of the Democratic Party to analyze and decide who will succeed him in the race for the White House, said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“It is a sovereign decision, which corresponds to the authorities, leaders of the United States (…) Politically (Biden) makes the decision not to participate in the re-election, that is already up to those who are members of the Democratic Party to decide,” he said.

On Sunday, after weeks of intense pressure from his fellow Republicans, Biden abandoned his bid for a second term in office and endorsed the nomination to his vice president, Kamala Harris. His decision came three weeks after his disastrous performance in the first debate he held with his Republican rival, Donald Trump.

Yesterday, during the morning press conference, the Mexican president was asked about this, to which he highlighted Biden’s work at the head of the White House.

We have a very good relationship with President Joe Biden. We consider him a good leader.

Low unemployment rate

For López Obrador, his American counterpart has had good results, since, for example, the economy of that country remains stable, in addition to maintaining a low unemployment rate of 3.9 percent, as well as low inflation, with a nation that continues to grow.

They knew how to deal effectively, efficiently, with a good strategy with the economic difficulty that the pandemic meant, the economic crisis that originated due to the war between Russia and Ukraine..

The Mexican head of government also stressed that the Biden administration was able to continue the USMCA signed just over five years ago with his predecessor Trump, which has allowed foreign investment to return to North America.

“With President Biden, the strategy of seeking self-sufficiency in North America, not depending so much on Asia, was consolidated (…) President Biden has had a good government. We will continue to seek to maintain a good relationship with the United States.”
