Long lines at police stations: more than 55 thousand people excused themselves from voting in the exit plebiscite

Carabineros reported that they received 55,110 records of excuses to vote, at the national level, from citizens who could not vote.

Specifically, 10,648 of these certificates correspond to the Metropolitan region, and 44,462 to other regions.

It is worth mentioning that the reasons for refusing to participate in the elections include: illness (Covid-19 or other illnesses), absence from the country, or being more than 200 kilometers away from your polling place.

As reported by the Electoral Service (Servel), those who do not comply with the corresponding excuse risk a fine that can range from 1/2 UTM to 3 UTM (between 29,000 and 176,000 pesos), a figure that must be paid before the respective Local Police Court.

Finally, and according to the same body, polling officers or members of scrutinizing colleges who have not attended their functions risk fines ranging from 2 to 8 UTM (between 175,544 and 470 thousand pesos).
