Local radio and television media unions issued a public statement in which they speak out about the complaints linked to the use of the electoral strip within the framework of the current electoral process.
The signatory associations – the Peruvian Chamber of Radio and Television (CPRTV), the National Association of Radio and Television (ANRTV) and the Coordinator of Local Media (Medios Perú) – indicate that “local media have rigorously complied with their registration and registration obligations with the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) as providers of electoral propaganda dissemination services.”
According to them, this compliance has implied “extra operational efforts and additional costs” to adapt to the administrative and technical requirements demanded by the electoral body.
The statement highlights that the decision to contract space in the media for the dissemination of political advertising corresponds exclusively to the political parties, while the media compete on equal terms by offering their reach and coverage within the formal channels enabled by the ONPE.
“The choice of media where each political organization decides to disseminate its electoral propaganda is the exclusive responsibility of the political parties,” they stressed in the text.
In the declaration, the unions express their support for the actions of the Public Ministry aimed at investigating the use of resources and investment decisions of political organizations in their electoral agenda, emphasizing that transparency is a fundamental duty in the context of any democratic process. “Control corresponds to the competent authorities,” they stated.
Likewise, they rejected any attempt to generalize or stigmatize all local media for events attributed to specific cases, and requested that any irregularities detected be investigated and punished on an individual basis, without harming those who have acted in accordance with the law and the procedures established by the ONPE.
