Local industry accelerates reform to simplify health records and shoot competitiveness

Santo Domingo.- Agilize and simplify the obtaining of the health registration for national production is one of the priorities of the Sectorial Committee of Local Industry, which presented a plan of four strategic initiatives to strengthen competitiveness and increase exports.

This information was presented during an expanded session of the Plenary Session of the National Competitiveness Council, held in the Las Cariátidas Hall of the National Palace, with the presence of President Luis Abinader and Vice President Raquel Peña. Of more than a thousand proposals discussed by the different sector committees of the Meta RD 2036 initiative, 63 prioritized during the meeting were presented.

Julio Virgilio Bracho, coordinator of the Committee, explained that, although progress has been made in the digitalization of permits and records, especially in medicines and food, it is still easier to import a product with a foreign health registry than to obtain it in the country.

“We have to eliminate those obstacles for the local industry to compete on equal terms,” he said.

The plan also includes the automation and simplification of the procedures of special regimes through a platform that favors productive chain with free zones and the tourism sector, eliminating tax barriers that today make local companies supply raw material to these sectors.

Another measure seeks to boost the exportable productive chain between MSMEs and large industries, so that small businesses can grow sustainably and increase their participation in the value chain.

Likewise, it is proposed to modify the 12-22 standard on the refund of the ITIS and article 350 of the Tax Code, allowing companies that export less than 100% of their production to access this fiscal benefit.

Bracho recalled that the local industry contributes 19% of GDP, more than 325 thousand jobs and 21% of the collections of the General Directorate of Internal Taxes (DGI), so these reforms, of national and long term scope, are key to maintaining their weight in the economy.
