Liverpool won 2-1 this Saturday on their visit to last-place Wolverhampton and is the new leader of the Premier League on matchday 6, benefiting from Manchester City’s draw in Newcastle (1-1).
The ‘Reds’ closed the Saturday day knowing the other results and, especially, the slip of the Citizens. With the victory, Liverpool have 15 points, one more than City (2nd) and Arsenal (3rd) who are tied on 14 points.
Despite facing the weakest rival in the Premier League, they had to wait until the last breath of the first half for Ibrahima Konaté (45+2) to open the scoring, heading a cross into the area from the Portuguese Diogo Jota .
The Frenchman was the protagonist in the second half… due to a mistake. Taking advantage of a lack of understanding between the center back and the Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Jorgen Strand Larsen got the ball near the small area and the play ended with a goal from his Algerian teammate Rayan Ait-Nouri (56).
To the relief of Arne Slot’s men, Nelson Semedo committed a penalty minutes later, knocking down Jota in the area, and Mohamed Salah did not forgive from the spot (61).
Liverpool’s next appointment will be in the Champions League, when they host Bologna on Wednesday on the second day.
