List of political prisoners exceeds 235, with unreported captures, says Berta Valle

The wife of the political prisoner and aspiring to face-to-face Félix Maradiaga, Berta Valle, denounces that the list of political prisoners grows more and more with arrests of state workers and imprisonments that are not published, due to the fear of their relatives, who prefer silence to avoid any retaliation from the operators of the regime.

It warns that there are more than 235 prisoners by the Nicaraguan regime, “every day the list of political prisoners in Nicaragua increases. To the list should be added the arbitrarily detained persons whose relatives decide not to denounce and the case of state workers. My solidarity for each of the families,” said Maradiaga’s wife.

Valle accompanied his complaint with information from the Mechanism for the Recognition of Political Prisoners in Nicaragua, which in its data maintains 235 people detained until November 30, mostly men, accounting for 209 and women 26. Of all of them, 225 were detained. after April 2018.

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (I/A Court HR) recently declared the Nicaraguan regime “permanent contempt” that has neglected the constant calls for respect for human rights and freedom for political prisoners.

The Court also reminded the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega of the provisional measures delivered in 2021 in favor of the political prisoners Juan Sebastián Chamorro García, José Adán Aguerri Chamorro, Félix Alejandro Maradiaga Blandón, Violeta Mercedes Granera Padilla, Tamara Dávila, Lesther Lenín Alemán and Freddy Navas Lopez. Demand that they be released “immediately.”

Currently, several of the detainees present problems and complications in their health due to the torture, cruel and inhuman treatment to which they have been subjected, according to the complaints from their relatives. The main affected are adults over 60 years of age, which according to the Mechanism reaches 36.

Nicaragua is experiencing a serious political crisis that erupted with social protests in April 2018, which were launched by police and Sandinista paramilitaries. The attacks left a balance of 355 dead, more than 2,000 injured, 1,600 arrested and at least 100,000 exiled, mostly refugees in Costa Rica.
