Lineman dies while working to restore electrical service in Pinar del Río

MADRID, Spain.- This Wednesday a lineman who worked in the recovery of the electrical service in Pinar del Río, the province most affected after Hurricane Ian passed through Cuba on September 27, died.

The news was confirmed by President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who wrote in Twitter: “We deeply regret the death of a young lineman who worked on the recovery of electricity in Pinar del Río. Condolences reach his family and friends for this painful accident ”.

“Our gratitude and respect for men and women in the electricity sector,” added the official, who did not reveal the identity of the deceased.

In comments to Díaz-Canel’s publication, users denounced the appalling working conditions in Cuba.

“That only happens in a country with a dictatorship, where the protocols are not followed and the real culprits come out innocent,” said Jose Rene Estevez Torres.

With the death of this young man, the number of deceased due to Ian’s incidence rises to six; among them other two also workers of the Electric Company.

At the beginning of October, linemen Carlos Peña Castellanos and Nelson Nieto died while working to repair the affected power line in Havana.

Carlos Peña Castellanos was a native of San Antonio de los Baños and was 35 years old. Nelson Nieto was seriously injured by an active line while working.

According to a neighbor who witnessed the accident, “the discharge pushed him towards the roof of the shed that was below and from there he fell to the floor. He was quickly transferred to the nearest polyclinic and from there to the hospital”, where he died.

More than a month after Ian passed through the Island, in Pinar del Río 10.48% of the clients of the Electric Union continue without power. As well as, according to official data, 89,071 buildings continue to be affected, of which 10,474 suffered total collapses, 11,027 partial collapses and 22,893 completely lost their roofs.
