Line 8 – Diamond of the São Paulo metropolitan train system once again presented equipment failure today (15). According to ViaMobilidade, the concessionaire that manages the line that connects the center of São Paulo to the western region of Greater São Paulo, the trains have been operating on a single track between Itapevi and Sagrado Coração since early in the morning.

Last Friday (13), the São Paulo State Secretariat of Metropolitan Transport (STM) fined ViaMobilidade R$ 3.6 million for not complying with the performance stipulated in the contract. The concessionaire is also responsible for Line 9 – Esmeralda. The secretariat had already imposed another fine on the company, of R$ 4.3 million, for the same reason. The concessionaire’s defense in these sanctions is still being analyzed in the administrative process.
According to STM, 28 failures were recorded on the lines managed by the concessionaire this year alone. “Now, repeated failure episodes, called notable incidents, underwent administrative analysis at the STM and generated new fines for ViaMobilidade. Some examples of failures are the opening of doors on the opposite side of the platform, disrespect for road signs and contractual issues related to the operation”, says the note from the secretary.
In March, one of the Line 8 trains collided with a protective barrier on the edge of the Júlio Prestes station stop. No one was injured at the time.
The concession for ViaMobilidade started in a shared way with Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) on December 27, 2021 and fully with the concessionaire as of January 27, 2022. The concession is for 30 years, foresees investments of R$ 3.8 billion, including the purchase of 36 new trains.
