Lima is the city in the world that hosts the most Venezuelans according to Acnur data

According to the report by the UN Refugee Agency, which consolidates global data from 2021, currently one in 78 people has been forced to leave their home. More than 1.3 million Venezuelans are residing in Peru and worldwide there are 6.1 million refugees, migrants and asylum seekers from Venezuela, according to official UN figures

The most recent annual report of Global trends of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) revealed that Peru is the country that hosts the largest number of refugee applications by citizens of Venezuela, and adds more than 532,000 requests. In this way, the capital of the South American country, Lima, is also the foreign city with the most Venezuelans in the world.

According to the study, more than 1.3 million Venezuelans live in Peru; of them, it is estimated that 1 million reside in Lima, mostly in the northern and eastern cone of the capital. In addition, the report reveals that the nation led by Pedro Castillo is among the five countries that host the most refugees in the world, along with Turkey, Colombia, Uganda and Pakistan.

In this way, migrants today represent 10% of the total population of Metropolitan Lima and Callao.

“Of the 6 million Venezuelans who have had to leave their country, just over 80% have gone to Latin America, mainly South America. In the case of Lima, it is the economically active population. About 65% are between 15 and 40 years old,” Federico Luis Agusti, UNHCR representative in Peru, told the newspaper. Trade.

Globally, Peru is the second destination country for Venezuelan refugees, behind the neighboring nation, Colombia. Likewise, according to figures from the Venezuelan-Peruvian Business Chamber, 47% of the migrant population has professional or technical studies.

Venezuelans add 6.1 outside their homes

UNHCR states that one fifth of the world’s refugees are found in the Americas, said José Samaniego, director of the agency’s regional office on this continent.

“The efforts of the countries of the region to regularize, provide protection and integrate these people locally are examples of solidarity that require greater support from the international community.”

In 2021, there were 6.1 million refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers from Venezuela worldwide (according to information provided by the Interagency Coordination Platform for Refugees and Migrants from Venezuela).

Regarding asylum applications, 1.4 million new applications were registered. Three of the five countries with the most requests are in the Americas: the United States of America was the country that received the highest number of individual requests (188,900); Germany (148,200), Mexico (132,700), Costa Rica (108,500) and France (90,200) followed.

Four of the 10 countries of origin with the largest number of asylum seekers are in Latin America and the Caribbean: Nicaragua (two), Venezuela (four), Haiti (fifth), and Honduras (sixth). By the end of 2021, there were more than 1.1 million refugees and asylum seekers from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala worldwide. Asylum applications filed by people from Nicaragua in 2021 were five times higher than the previous year.
