The dean of the Lima Bar Association (CAL)Raúl Canelo questioned the bill presented by the second vice president of Congress, Waldemar Cerronwhich aims to create a commission to oversee judges and prosecutors.
“Through supervision, acts of corruption such as bribery or influence peddling can be detected and prevented,” says the legislative proposal, which also points out that “the supervision of judges and prosecutors allows their performance to be monitored and evaluated, which increases confidence in the judicial system.”

In response, the dean of CAL announced on Radio Exitosa that the union will order the prosecution of all congressmen who are lawyers and support the initiative by the institution’s Ethics Council because, he argued, it is a measure that harms the profession.
He also criticised the proposals being debated by Parliament as being based on personal interests. “When one power monopolises all powers, it is a dictatorship, and that is what those who support this type of law are trying to achieve,” he commented.
The day before, representatives of different branches of government also spoke out against Waldemar Cerrón’s project, which will be debated in the Parliament’s Justice Committee. The first to warn of the negative consequences of the proposal was the president of the Judiciary, Javier Arévalo, who warned that the measure is anti-democratic and unconstitutional.
“It reflects a totalitarian spirit of controlling the justice administration bodies. We reject this project and we tell the democratically-minded congressmen to prevent its passage,” he said.

He also urged the President of Congress, Eduardo Salhuana, to review these types of initiatives that only contribute – he said – to unnecessary confrontation between the powers of the State and damage the image of our country.
The head of the Legislature, for his part, also distanced himself from the proposal of Cerrón, who is a member of the Board of Directors of Congress.
