Liberal Party distances itself from the PPD and will seek to agree with Approve Dignity and the PS for the election of the Constitutional Council

Pending the definition of the Socialist Party (PS), after the Party for Democracy (PPD) reported that it will come together in a second list with the Christian Democrats (DC) and the Radical Party (PR), Patricio Morales, president of the Liberal Party (PL), communicated the decision of his community to integrate the other list with Approve Dignity and eventually the Socialists.

All this, in the midst of the uncertainty that has remained in the ruling party, about whether to go on one or two lists, in view of the election of the Constitutional Council —on May 7—, a dispute that occurred between the two souls From the Government of President Gabriel Boric: I approve of Dignity (FA, PC, FRVS) and Democratic Socialism (PS, PPD, PL). Now, the PL distances itself from the PPD, although it assures that it continues to be part of said conglomerate.

“The National Council of the PL, by 82%, has approved the establishment of an electoral pact together with the PS and I Approve Dignity,” confirmed the party’s helmsman. Morales maintained that this decision will be ratified on February 6, when Servel’s deadline to establish a constituent pact expires.

Tomorrow, the PL will make contact with the political forces of the Government, to join the negotiating tables and evaluate the possible candidacies. “I also anticipate that the PL will promote collaborative activity seeking ‘omission pacts’, an instrument that can help to have a broader majority of progressivism,” said Patricio Morales, referring to the power that certain regions will have to favor the other list.

The president of the PL remarked that the socialists must take a position, while the PPD has already expressed its political position to them, and the same has been done by the PR. “We would have liked to have maintained unity among all government forces,” Morales said, along with validating the legitimate positions of his allies.

Finally, the leader of the liberals stressed that the party remains within Democratic Socialism. “What we are expressing today is an electoral pact for the new Constitution of Chile. We are from the Government, from SD, but today unity will be sought with the PS and AD for the constituent assembly,” he explained.

For his part, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, PL militant Vlado Mirosevic, said after the meeting that they are seeking to “maximize having the widest possible majority in the Constitutional Council, given the importance of having a democratic Constitution “.

The decision of the liberals is known a few hours after the Party for Democracy reaffirms its commitment to the two lists, despite the aforementioned call by Gabriel Boric and the one made, in the same sense, by the Socialist Party.
