The Madureira neighborhood, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, hosts its 21st LGBTI+ Parade this Sunday (1st), considered one of the biggest demonstrations for sexual and gender diversity in Brazilian outskirts. The parade is scheduled to start at 1pm on Estrada do Portela.
This year, the event has the artistic direction of carnival artist Milton Cunha, who is also vice-president of the Movimento de Gays, Transvestis e Transformistas (MGTT), the group that has organized the parade since its first edition.
The event will feature the special participation of singer Sandra de Sá, who will perform the closing show, at the Portela court.
To support the event, the city of Rio de Janeiro set up a special scheme that will have 55 municipal guards. It is recommended that participants travel to the location by public transport.
The city hall’s Sexual Diversity coordinator, Carlos Tufvesson, said that public authorities will take advantage of the moment to raise awareness and offer municipal services.
“The Madureira Parade, especially now with the artistic direction of Milton Cunha, is very important for the LGBTI+ movement in Rio de Janeiro. It is also an opportunity to remind us of law 2475, which prohibits prejudice and discrimination in establishments commercial and municipal bodies”.
