Lgbti activists held a health day to benefit the community and their allies

At the Bosque Blanco Medical Center in Caracas, 25 people from the Lgbti community and allies received dental care, screening for diabetes and hypertension, neurosurgery, rheumatology, psychology, internal medicine, and physiotherapy; the latter three being the most in demand

Activists held a free medical day this Friday, July 7, at the Bosque Blanco Medical Center, located in Caracas, to provide primary and secondary care to members of the Lgbti community and hetero-allies; this as part of the public incidence that the participants of the Prisma diploma must carry out, training designed by the non-governmental organization country plural and is endorsed by the Metropolitan, Catholic Andrés Bello and Central Universities of Venezuela.

25 people benefited from dental care, screening for diabetes and hypertension, neurosurgery, rheumatology, psychology, internal medicine and physiotherapy; the latter three being the most in demand.

Daniel Torres, a neurosurgeon, said that the project responds to two problems: the complex health crisis that Venezuela is experiencing and the lack of knowledge that often surrounds health personnel; since a large part of the members of the Lgbti community avoid attending medical centers for fear of being discriminated against due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

«Queer Clinic (Queer Clinic) is a project that seeks to provide an inclusive health space to all members of the Lgbti community, because we want everyone to feel safe away from social stigmas. Those who are most affected by this situation are trans and non-binary people, since they often have to change their way of dressing and behavior just to avoid being judged at the time of medical care, “explained the specialist.

For his part, Deiker Rondón, a participant in the third cohort of the Prisma graduate, asserted that the initiative is very necessary in the country because on two occasions he has been classified as promiscuous when he went to the emergency room, forcing him to take an HIV test first. in order to continue caring for him, despite the fact that the pathology presented on both occasions did not respond to said disease.

«The attention was fast and of quality, so the project can be an excellent idea to develop in the long term. We need more spaces to be heard, that’s why my attention today was focused on the psychologist,” said Rondón.

The internist Luz Hernández said that the experience was “atypical, but enriching” because it takes place in a different process from the one used when caring for heterosexual patients; however, she hopes to continue participating continuously in the next days that are held.

“It is necessary to ask patients what their pronouns are and thus generate a reliable space within the office, where they are treated by how they identify themselves beyond the name that may appear on their identity document,” the internist recommended.

Activists of the Lgbti community hope to be able to carry out other conferences and that the project will be self-sustaining in the future, in addition to adding alliances and collaborators in order to improve the public and private health system that those who are part of the community face today.
