The Colombian Foreign Minister, Álvaro Leyva, hopes that the International Conference on Venezuela, to be held next Tuesday the 25th in the city of Bogotá, will lay the foundations for an agreement and the lifting of sanctions against the country.
This was stated by the official after holding a meeting last Saturday night together with the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, with actors from the Venezuelan opposition, whose objective was to prepare the aforementioned conference that aims to relaunch the political dialogue between the Government and the opposition, which was taking place in Mexico last year.
Agreement between Venezuelans
Leyva affirmed that in Tuesday’s meeting “20 countries will talk about Venezuela and each one will express what they consider regarding a solution, but obviously on the basis that the agreement has to be between Venezuelans, which naturally implies an electoral schedule with guarantees and lifting of sanctions in parallel”.
Similarly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that Colombia is “in a search for solutions for the neighboring country because it is time for a campaign for Latin America in the sense that what counts is democracy in the inter-American system.”
He added that it will not be easy “but we are not going to evade that commitment; we want to be some precipitators and guarantors of an agreement that I have the feeling that it is going to happen. This is the moment, there is no other, and that is why we want to do it quickly, the situation is given”.
For his part, the coordinator of the Unitary Platform, Gerardo Blyde, who spoke on behalf of the Venezuelan opposition, said that they hope that Tuesday’s meeting in Bogotá will be the starting point to resume talks in Mexico with the government of President Nicolás Maduro. .
