Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said he will present a proposal to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for Mexico to apply to host the 2036 or 2040 Summer Olympics.
“Mexico would be proud to host the Olympic Games again and if the President of the Republic authorizes it, then we proceed to prepare Mexico’s proposal to host it in 2036 or 2040,” said the head of the Secretariat of Foreign Relations of Mexico at a press conference.
The next Summer Olympics are scheduled to take place in Paris, France in 2024, the 2028 Games will be held in Los Angeles, in the United States, and the city of Brisbane, in Australia, will host the 2032 Olympics.
The intention with this proposal, explained Ebrard, is to get the country back to the forefront of international sports after organizing the 2026 World Cup together with the United States and Canada.
“Time is not so important, we are not thinking about it for a short-term benefit, but for Mexico to be on the international scene, which is where it has to be,” he added.
The foreign minister, one of the candidates to replace President López Obrador in 2024, recalled the effort required for Mexico to hold the 1968 Olympic Games, while mentioning the need to relive an experience of that caliber.
“The 1968 Olympic Games were very well organized by Mexico, although it took a lot of work to carry them out and we think that in this century it is up to the country to once again host this sporting event.”
According to Marcelo Ebrard, the desire to organize this event for the second time in history is something that managers from various sports disciplines in the country have expressed to him.
