He highlighted that he decided to join the initiative promoted by the federal government ‘Yes to disarmament, yes to peace’, as he assured that building peace is also in the “DNA” of the church.
“There are many testimonies throughout the country: priests, nuns, faithful of the Church, who serve from their realities to defend human dignity, to set the example that if we want to achieve peace, we have to start by doing something ourselves. ”, he noted.
He even recalled that the defense of peace has cost the lives of some people, such as the Jesuits Joaquín Mora and Javier Campos, in the mountains of Chihuahua, as well as Father Marcelo, in Chiapas.
He stressed that it was for this reason that on January 10, the campaign “Yes to disarmament, yes to peace” began in the Basilica of Guadalupe, promoted in conjunction with federal government authorities.
“The church is open to everyone. (…) Therefore, the opening of its atria for this campaign is done with the hope of greater coordination between government and society, to generate deep processes in the reconstruction of communities,” he noted.
He stressed that peace is “urgent and necessary” for Mexico, which is why he decided to join the initiative. However, he called for more public policies to achieve peace.
“We invite the entire society to work so that weapons remain silent, so that young people do not find an alternative in a pistol or a rifle, so that we heed the cry of pain and suffering that weapons have caused in thousands of families, to move to the closed, wounded or lonely hearts, who today find satisfaction in the sound of bullets,” he added.
