Opposition leader Leopoldo López participated in the Summit for Democracy Copenhagen 2022as part of a panel together with other political leaders promoting democracy.

During his speech, López emphasized the need to create a global alliance that stands against the autocracies of the world “for the defense of freedom, human rights and the rule of law” in any place where democracy is seen. threatened.

López’s request came after various threats to global democracy were discussed, a discussion in which much emphasis was placed on the situation in Ukraine after the Russian invasion, since the leaders considered that it is a struggle between democracies and autocracies, rather than just between two countries.

The experts argued that the current global conflict does not pit left against right, but dictatorships against democracies, which, according to López, was demonstrated after Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.

“We must be aware of where we are now, we are going through a global conflict that has become very clear that it is autocracy against democracy. It is a dominant struggle that the world is facing today, and it was demonstrated after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” he stressed at the opening of the panel.

“I am convinced that the attitude of millions of people around the world is allied with our fight for freedom,” he stressed in the panel accompanied by the president of the National Democratic Institute, Jonas Parello-Plesner; the executive director of the Alliance for Democracy Foundation, Derek Mitchell; and the President of the Executive Committee of the European Foundation for Democracy, Lisbeth Pilegaard.

Regarding this struggle between democracy and autocracies, Twining argued that the success of autocratic models has to do with the unity they show among their governments on the international scene, something that the democratic global system is not so good at.

“We have to do better, supporting freedom fighters and non-violent, peaceful civil disobedience who want change in their countries,” he said.

Helping Ukraine is helping the world

The second day of this event was closely related to the situation in Ukraine, to the point of having the participation of the Ukrainian president, Volodímir Zelenski, who connected virtually from kyiv.

The Ukrainian president recalled that last year, during the previous summit, the question was raised as to what battlefield democracy would have to face and that the answer was “authoritarianism.”
