Leonel and Daniel

Leonel and Daniel

This year, the month of June, in addition to the start of the hurricane season, school vacations and for Catholics, Corpus Christi, heralds great political activism. Leonel Fernández and Danilo Medina will take to the streets, again in a battle for the same electoral space. Now Danilo as owner of the PLD structure and Leonel with his new party, FP.

At this stage of the fight between the two politicians, Fernández comes out with a great advantage over Medina. Leonel is already a presidential candidate and Danilo cannot because the Constitution prohibits him. The first is in a good political moment, placed second in the preference of the electorate for the 2024 elections, but Medina, in these circumstances, has an image problem associated with corruption cases of which relatives and close collaborators are accused. committed in his government.

The PLD announced that its leader and president is scheduled to be sworn in for the four Sundays of the month that starts today. Medina already led a first such act in Azua, two weeks ago, where he stated that more than 13,000 new members joined the PLD. There is no doubt that Medina came out to reactivate his party, and with good reason because none of the presidential candidates has the impact of the former president when he takes to the streets.

What does not fit in the PLD’s strategy is that Medina’s departure overshadows the growth of the pre-candidates and Danilo cannot be a presidential candidate because he has a constitutional impediment.

In addition, since he left, two Pepca officials have said that they are investigating him for acts of corruption. Although his presence revives the PLD, it also places on the agenda of the people that several relatives and close collaborators have been accused of corruption.

Leonel has not stopped since the 2020 elections passed. But starting this Sunday he will have a new momentum.

José Francisco Peña Guaba, who coordinates the alliances for Fernández’s presidential candidacy, reported that this Sunday will be the first act of the Great National Alliance for Economic and Social Renewal (Won), a platform that seeks to create an opposition front to the PRM.
