MIAMI, United States. — The independent Cuban journalists Henry Constantín and Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca (currently in prison) received the Carlos Alberto Montaner journalism award this Thursday, which is awarded by the Fundación Rescate Jurídico.
“The best thing about the news is not the amount or knowing that the jury appreciates my work in Cuba so much, but with whom I have shared the prize, with Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca, a journalist and activist who has been in prison for more than a year for exercising his freedom of expression,” said Constantín in social networks.
Director of Cuban Time highlighted the figure of Valle Roca, whose situation has worsened in prison because of health problems.
“I know him and admire him for being a guy who is as witty as he is clear in his ideas, and determined to stay in Cuba and not with his arms crossed. He deserves it very much. Congratulations to him and his wife Eralidis Frometa, who leads the daily battle for the freedom and life of this exceptional Cuban”.
According to Henry Constantín, the Fundación Rescate Jurídico also recognized the activists and political prisoners Sayli Navarro Álvarez, daughter of the well-known opponent and political prisoner Félix Navarro, and Sissi Abascal, protesters on July 11, 2021 (11J).
“When any doubt or fear of what to do with Cuba comes up to me, I think of these two young women, who are enduring the prison they have been given with incredible dignity. They inspire me,” added the reporter.
Lastly, Constantín thanked the Fundación Rescate Jurídico, an organization that aims to empower Cuban civil society activists with the knowledge and leadership training that allows them to promote democratic values in their communities through peaceful struggle.
“Thanks to the Fundación Rescate Jurídico for giving me this award named Carlos Alberto Montaner, one of the intellectuals who has influenced me the most. Thank you, once again, to you friends in the networks and the world, for helping me to persevere in journalism and in Cuba Libre, which will be our greatest prize”.
