Five days after the election of the board of directors, the departure is underway and nothing is determined. In Congress, the benches move their chips with stealth and calculation to assemble the winning list for this Saturday 26.
For now, there are two lists in competition, each with their own interests. The official, backed by Popular Force, App, Peru Libre and Somos Peru, adds 54 votes: FP (21), App (15), PL (10, without Kelly Portalatino) and SP (8). This, not counting country (6).
But there are cracks: country progress, with its six votes, would have discreetly crossed the bridge to the opposition, and could tip the balance at the time of counting.
On the other shore is the second list, where the opposition is reorganized. Popular renewal and Podemos Peru have closed ranks around José Cueto, the Admiral of Honor and Democracy. His presidency candidacy – even unofficial – already generates adhesions and misgivings.
With progress country possibly on board, this formula would add 35 votes: popular renewal (11), Avanza country (6), Honor and Democracy (5) and Podemos Peru (13).
BDP defines today if he launches third list
On this moving board, the left has entered the scene and seeks to bet on the winner. The popular democratic block (BDP), led by Carlos Zeballos, evaluates to present a third list, with him as a possible candidate for the presidency proposed by some legislators.
The alert was given to El Comercio, and Peru21 looked for it to specify the panorama.
Are they really looking for competing or just gaining weight in negotiation for power?
Zeballos confirmed to Peru21 that his bench will decide on Monday, at 6:00 pm, if they opt for a third list.
This could be made up of the socialist bench and other non -grouped congressmen, although they would leave with only ten votes (five of BDP and five of the BS).
Willing to ally with honor and democracy
Zeballos is aware that the numbers do not reach them. Therefore, he indicated that his bench will also discuss a “plan B”: negotiate a consensus list with the opposition block promoted José Cueto.
However, he criticized that the communications issued by popular renewal and Podemos Peru this Sunday afternoon “do not help”, since, “the goal is to open the dialogue, not close it with an imposed candidacy.
In that line, he pointed out that, if they opt for a consensus alliance, it will be key to define “who will lead it”.
Even so, he made it clear that nothing is unnegotiable, not even his postulation to the presidency. I could accept a vice presidency or not integrate the list, provided that a broad agreement is achieved to form a winning candidacy.
Nor did he rule out that Cueto is headed.
The calculation is clear: if the BDP adds to Cueto – or vice versa – and they do so progress and popular action, they could tip the balance. The opposition would reach 63 votes and exceed the official bloc.
This would be the distribution: together for Peru (9 votes, adding that of Margot Palacios), socialist bench (5), Popular Democratic Block (5), Popular Action (9) and the 35 of the group led by Cueto.
The question of Somos Peru and José Jerí
Within the official bloc, we are Peru faces its own dilemma: support José Jerí, investigated for a case of sexual violation, for the board of directors, or support a less questioned profile. Your decision will be key to maintaining the support of APP, FP and PL, or move that alliance towards an alternative candidate.
The definition will arrive on Monday: the candidacy of Jerí will be announced after a meeting at 4:00 pm at the premises of Somos Peru, in Santa Catalina.
Popular Action, The Hemicycle Key
In parallel, the popular action bench plays winner. According to Channel N, Julio Chávez, president of the party, his priority is to ensure the first vice presidency. Negotiations with both lists have been intense.
In politics, ambiguity is power. And Popular Action knows: while listening to everyone, it feeds the expectation in every corner of the Legislative Palace.
Ilich López and Luis Aragón, displayed as candidates for vice presidencies, face investigations for the ‘Children’ case. Are marked letters or sacrifiable pieces?
The board of directors is not just a position: it is control of the budget, the commissions and the legislative narrative. APP, Popular Force and Peru Free have dominated the last two years. Cueto, on the other hand, promises an audit and the end of the semipresenciality. Real change or campaign speech?
The popular action vote will be decisive. And they know it.
Today it will also be known if the popular democratic block goes only with the socialist block and not grouped, or if it adds to a consensus list that could win the election.
