Within the framework of the Leaders’ Summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) 2024, Peru becomes the epicenter of important multilateral and bilateral agreements seeking to promote economic growth and strengthen international cooperation in various strategic sectors. Leaders from all over the world have arrived in the Peruvian capital to discuss key issues in trade, technology and sustainability.

In recent days, the Sultan of Brunei, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, held a meeting with President Dina Boluarte, where announced the future signing of a memorandum of understanding to establish a bilateral consultation mechanism. This initiative seeks to expand the cooperation agenda between both countries. “I express Peru’s firm will to take advantage of this new platform for dialogue that opens with the signing of this memorandum that will allow the regularity of its sessions”declared Boluarte, who stressed the importance of maintaining a fluid collaboration with Brunei.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, also met with the Peruvian president, and both countries signed several memorandums of understanding in areas such as Halal certification, agriculture, gastronomy and tourism.
In addition, they agreed to continue their collaboration on issues of biodiversity, renewable energy and climate change, within the framework of a South-South alliance. Malaysia showed special interest in developing a Halal ecosystem in Peru, including a possible Halal economic zone in the port of Chancay, which would open trade opportunities in the region and strengthen the link between both countries in the sector.
- The visit of the president of Vietnam promoted agreements to promote the exchange of knowledge and the participation of Vietnamese companies in strategic sectors such as digital infrastructure, smart cities, cybersecurity, digital health, education and digital finance. These agreements are aligned with the objective of integrating advanced technologies and improving digital infrastructure in Peru, positioning the country as a key node in the region in technological innovation.
One of the most anticipated announcements is the imminent signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Peru and Hong Kong. This treaty will include new chapters on Competition Policy, Electronic Commerce, Global Supply Chain, Cooperation on Standards and Conformity Assessment, and Environment, with the purpose of consolidating the commercial relationship between both territories.
