The final meeting of the leaders of the 21 economies that are part of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum APEC 2024 It culminated in the transfer of command from Peru to South Korea, site of the next event to be held in 2025.
President Dina Boluarte presented the varayoc, a symbol of power during the Inca empire, to President Yoon Suk-yeol, who will host the meeting next year.
Immediately afterwards, the leaders were invited to stand on the podium for the formal photograph of the event. A characteristic that caught attention is that all the leaders wear an alpaca scarf, a gift they have received from the Peruvian government.
During the meeting with the leaders, President Boluarte affirmed the importance of the commitments reached during the summit regarding sustainable economic development.
“We are united by the common commitment to economic growth and resilience in our region, in this context it is important to highlight that APEC has taken significant steps towards that vision by adopting key deliverables,” he said.
He said these include the development and implementation of low-carbon hydrogen policy frameworks in the Asia Pacific, “critical to the transition to greener economies”.
Likewise, he said that the second most important is the set of principles to reduce and prevent food loss and waste, “a challenge that affects our environmental and economic sustainability.”
“These achievements are a testament to our collective commitment, however today we must focus on how to implement these advances ensuring that they contribute meaningfully to our inclusive economic agenda, especially in our efforts to support our transition to a formal and global economy,” he referred.
