MADRID, Spain.- Independent journalist and political prisoner Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca was transferred to the Combinado del Este hospital in Havana after his health condition worsened.
His wife, the political activist Eralidis Frómeta Polanco, explained this Sunday through Facebook that according to what they told him in a recent visit, “a blood test showed a bacterium that they are fighting with rocephin”.
“He has been receiving this treatment for three days and despite the other health conditions, at least that one has improved; although she could well have been in a serious state with danger to life since her humor was almost watering her, ”said Frómeta.
Just as he announced that “there were many headaches, cramps, that he could barely move his head. In addition to the fact that he already had two more types of tumors that were coming out attached to the brain ”.
“We also learned that this bacterium can attack him again due to the inhumane way in which he is living inside the prison,” said the opponent’s wife.
At the beginning of this month, Eralidis Frómeta had denounced that the Cuban regime refused to provide medical assistance to Valle Roca, despite the deterioration of his health.
On that occasion Frómeta recalled that her 60-year-old husband has kidney failure, uncontrolled blood pressure, lung problems, loss of teeth, skin lesions and constant swelling in his feet; as well as that seven pimples had appeared on the back of his head, “which look like tumors and they hurt a lot.”
Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca was arrested on June 15, 2021 and sentenced to six years in prison for the alleged crimes of “ongoing enemy propaganda and resistance.”
His health problems began when he was detained in Villa Marista, as a result of a hunger strike that he carried out for 17 days to demand his release.
Prolonged fasting caused kidney failure and other sequelae that were never treated. Prior to this week’s hospitalization, he had been treated only once, in February 2022. On that occasion, a specialist from the National Hospital assured that the kidney problems had disappeared without being treated.

Behind the february income of 2022, the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) demanded his immediate release; and through a statement he blamed “the regime for what could happen to it.”
“With total impunity for its actions, Cuba continues to violate international precepts on the human rights of those incarcerated to receive medical attention, to dignified treatment, and to enjoy a fair legal process,” said Jorge Canahuati, president of the IAPA.
In Maythe United States Embassy in Cuba denounced the situation of the independent journalist through Twitter.
“We demand the immediate release of the journalist Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca, detained since June 2021 for his coverage of an event of democratic reforms in Cuba. We denounce that the regime has requested six years in prison. Freedom of expression is a human right,” said the consular headquarters.
At the beginning of this month, the former president of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize winner Óscar Arias declared who would sponsor Valle Roca.
“I want to tell the Cuban regime that noble ends cannot be achieved with ignoble means. That with the torture and imprisonment of the men and women who oppose the regime, the voices of those who have lost their freedom in their fight against the dictatorship will not be silenced,” Arias said in a video shared on social networks by the lawyer and Venezuelan human rights activist Tamara Sujú.
