Lawyers request to investigate Piñera's participation in destabilization against Venezuela

Two Chilean lawyers asked the Comptroller General of that nation to open an investigation aimed at clarifying the alleged participation of former President Sebastián Piñera in destabilization plans against Venezuela.

Roberto Ávila Toledo and Luis Ernesto Toro Toro sent a communication to the Comptroller General of Chile requesting that they investigate facts consisting of “the planning, agreements, maneuvers, which obviously imply the expenditure of resources, all of them destined for the overthrow and possible military aggression against the Government of the Republic of Venezuela”.

The lawyers specifically refer to the events that occurred in Cúcuta, Colombia, between February 22 and 23, 2019, when a sector of the Venezuelan opposition led by Juan Guaidó tried to enter Venezuela with trucks that were supposedly transporting “humanitarian aid.” For that date, several Latin American presidents traveled to Colombia, including Sebastián Piñera.

“The president went with two planes from the Chilean Air Force, for which there is use of resources and fiscal spending that must be clarified,” Toledo and Toro state in their communication to the Comptroller General of Chile. “These events eventually involve the Chilean Army,” the legal professionals said.

To advance the investigation, the lawyers asked Piñera and the then Army commanders to take a statement. They also asked to determine “what the two Chilean Air Force planes that accompanied the (then President) were carrying and especially if they were carrying war material to support the uprising that was being promoted in Cúcuta, Colombia on February 23, 2019.”

Toledo and Toro recalled that between Chile and Venezuela there have been ties of friendship “that are known and that start from the independence struggles.”
