The case of the former president, Jeanine Áñez, was already presented before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in May 2023 and the Bolivian State must prepare to grant compensation because the case will reach the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR Court). for the flagrant violation of rights that he suffered in this process of the ‘coup II’ case, lawyer Eusebio Vera, who is a defender of the military leaders, warned this Friday.

“This ruling will surely have consequences for the Bolivian State because there is already an international lawsuit underway for the violation of the rights of the former president (Jeanine Áñez) and the State will have to financially compensate for these actions. and it will be the taxpayer’s pocket that pays for that demand“explained the lawyer. He added that it will be time for the authorities of that time to judge those who cause damage to the State coffers.

In May 2023 The former president’s defense announced that it presented its complaint to the IACHR and on Wednesday, May 15, they again announced a second lawsuit against the State for the denial of justice.

“We lawyers in Bolivia, those of us who litigate daily, know that in most cases, any appeal that reaches Sucre (to the Supreme Court of Justice) takes up to three years to be resolved and no one says anything, In this case there was a curious and excessive speed”Vera explained.

The first instance ruling was handed down in June 2022 and almost two years later the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) ruled ratifying that first decision. However, Vera said that that decision was the last step and now the former president’s defense has all the arguments to support her international claim.

He recalled that he is about to reach the Inter-American Court the so-called terrorism case in which the defendant is the State and there are eight other processes of people involved in that scandal in 2009. The Attorney General’s Office has already reported that it cannot pay the compensation requested by the victims. The plaintiffs also announced that they will take the State to court.

According to the lawyer, his clients and the other military leaders who were included in this trial also They are analyzing the possibility of taking the State before international justice.
