The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, will arrive in Managua on April 19, coming from Venezuela, just when the five years of the protests against President Daniel Ortega, Nicaraguan government spokeswoman and vice president Rosario Murillo reported on Tuesday.
Murillo said that the head of Russian diplomacy will arrive with “a large delegation” and that he will enter into talks with President Ortega and Foreign Minister Denis Moncada, although he did not specify the issues that will be discussed.
“We are waiting for brother Lavrov’s visit tomorrow,” Murillo said, “seeing the future, working, thinking, envisioning the future we want with a world of justice and respectful cooperation,” he added.
The Russian embassy in Nicaragua has not announced the agenda planned by the diplomat, however it is part of a tour of Latin America between April 17 and 21.
He has already visited Brazil, Venezuela, and, after Nicaragua, he will close the tour in Cuba.
Relations between the two countries have gained importance after the protests against Ortega in 2018 that left more than 300 dead due to state repression, and for the invasion of russia to Ukraine.
For both actions, the international community has imposed sanctions on Russia and Nicaragua, which the leaders of these countries have called “arbitrary.”
Murillo pointed out that these nations are united by “historical and revolutionary ties”, despite the fact that the main trading partner of Managua is still the United States.
